The U.S. has been ever-diligent against the threat of terrorism since 9/11 but a new report suggesting Twitter could be used as a terrorist tool seems over the top.
The report – prepared by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion – looks at the different technologies that terrorists cold to use plan an attack. This includes GPS, wireless services and Twitter mashups.
Twitter is already used by some members to post and/or support extremist ideologies and perspectives. Extremist and terrorist use of Twitter could evolve over time to reflect tactics that are already evolving in use by hacktivists and activists for surveillance. This could theoretically be combined with targeting.
In theory, the report is accurate because Twitter has become a useful communications tool. Then again, you could easily argue that GPS and location-based services are even more of a threat if embraced by terrorists.
