So, spammers love Twitter but how do you stop it?
Here’s what you do:
1. Make sure you check out who’s following you. If they appear to be shady – e.g. a SEO specialist (there are lots of them out there) – or someone who’s exceedingly good looking – then you can block them. It may seem aggressive but they’re spammers so do what you need to do.
2. Don’t try to follow everyone. Even if someone follows you, don’t feel obligated to follow them because spammers thrive on Twitter by following lots of people and being followed. I’ve only got about 100 people I follow but that’s enough. Anyone who tells you they can follow a 1,000 people is fooling themselves.
3. Tell Twitter’s spam police force. They’ve been forced to hire full-time employees to deal with spam so why not give them a hand.

Aww c’mon – not all SEO specialists are bad guys! Some of us are actually very well behaved bloggers and Twitter-ers.
Mike,
My apologies for painting the SEO community with such a broad brush. Still, there do seem to be an awful lot of SEO folks around.
