The Year in Numbers

There’s no doubt Twitter has enjoyed a phenomenal year, going from a niche service used by the bleeding-edge into the flag carrier for the micro-blogging revolution.

In terms of numbers, comScore reports that Twitter has grown from about 600,000 unique users (U.S.) to 3.5 million – a stunning six-fold increase.

More important, Twitter has gone from a fairly low profile geeky tool to a communications medium used by many people to report news on the fly such as the crash of a Continental Airlines 737 on Saturday.

With such an impressive year, there are huge expectations as Twitter goes into 2009. Among them is Twitter’s ability to make money.

There are lots of hints but until Twitter unveils its plans, it will be impossible to know whether Twitter can cross the chasm from popular service to viable business.
