Amid the current credit crunch, it’s encouraging to see that microblogging services are still able to raise some venture capital – albeit small rounds.
TweetDeck, which has established itself as one of the leading Twitter desktop clients (I’m a big fan!) has raised about $500,000 in seed capital from Betaworks
, while Montreal-based Identic.ca, an open-source microblogging service that attracted a lot of attention when it launched last year, raised C$400,000 from local angel investors.
According to TechCrunch, this is Betaworks’ fourth Twitter-related seed investment. Its other deals include Summize, TipJoy and StockTwits.
Iain Dodsworth, who developed TweetDeck, said he plans to turn the start-up into a revenue-generating operation by getting power users (I guess that includes people like me!) to pay for a premium version.
To be honest, TweetDeck is a product that I’d be happy to pay to use. It needs a few more bells and whistles but it’s a solid product that has replaced Twitter.com and Thwirl as my Twitter client.

I agree. I chipped in for TweetDeck already. I can only imagine the cool things Iain has up his sleeve!
