TweetDeck Gets an Update

Among the Twitter deskt0p clients available, TweetDeck has established itself as the market leader. If you’re not using TweetDeck, you should definitely check it.

According to ReadWriteWeb, a new version of TweetDeck is now available that includes several new features, including hashtag support, language translation, and the integration of StockTwits that tracks news around stocks.

While I more often see "I love this!" kind of comments from people trying TweetDeck, I think it is only accurate to say that it is "a" market leader, not "the" market leader. Twitterrific still claims more tweets, although both pale in comparison to the web. Take a look at Ed Finkler's source stats (http://funkatron.com/twitter-source-stats) for how this is changing.

I understand why people like groups, especially those who are cresting over the Dunbar Number and struggling with being overwhelmed by information. However, Twitter and all other channels become exponentially more complicated if I have to split my identity. I like the ability to just be me and try to see everyone in my tweet stream as them. The moment I start playing favorites with particular subgroups is probably the time I should consider unfollowing people.

I still prefer Twitterrific on the mac for its simplicity and its low intrusion. Although its best feature—the ambient pop-up/go-away that comes with each tweet—is now being handled by Growl on my Mac, I also like its small footprint. On my small laptop, the cool features of TweetDeck become a screen real estate hog. The "One Column View" may prompt me to try it again.

Thanks for the thoughts. The reason I like TweetDeck is the multi-panel interface, which provides different views of what's happening. On my iPod Touch, I'm a big Twitterific fan.
