All Things Digital has a story about a new service called ExecTweets that collects and profiles Twitter updates made by business executives.
Apparently, Twitter is going to be collecting fees from ExecTweets for providing its stamp of approval and for promoting ExecTweets on Twitter.
With hundreds of companies using Twitter’s API to create new and interesting services, the deal with ExecTweets raises the possibility of Twitter making revenue by charging to provide a higher level of service. In addition to providing its official “Powered by Twitter” stamp of approval, Twitter could also make money by providing third-party services with a higher API threshold.
This may be idle speculation but there’s no doubt Twitter is actively exploring a number of business models to see what works. It may be that Twitter’s business model does not involve a silver bullet such as what Google stumbled upon with AdSense.
In fact, Twitter’s business model may slowly evolve over time as the number of users grows, particularly businesses that want to use Twitter as a marketing and sales tool.
