It must be a slow news day in TechLand if TechCrunch is trumpeting the fact Google is close to completing a deal to acquire Twitter.
Wait, TechCrunch now reports discussions are only in the early stages, and the two companies are looking at ways at working together on Google’s real-time search engine project.
Rumors, speculation and innuendo make the world go round, and the blogopshere likes nothing better than stirring the pot to generate attention and pageviews.
While not to suggest there’s nothing to the TechCrunch story but it looks like it pulled the trigger too soon before getting a handle on the story.
In the bigger scheme of things, Google acquiring Twitter makes a lot sense given Twitter is emerging as a powerful way to do real-time search.
In hindsight, Google should have acquired Twitter rather than Jaiku but hindsight, after all, is 20-20 – unlike speculation and rumors.
