As a fast-growing company, Twitter needs to staff up quickly. The company attracted some attention recently when it posted a job listing for a celebrity concierge – someone who would cater to the needs of celebrities. The posting was quickly pulled off the site after several bloggers, including Twitterrati, poked fun at it.
In the wake of this strange move, Austin Hill has a lengthy and insightful post about how Twitter’s “Next Fail Whale can be found on their Recruiting Page”.
He suggests Twitter needs to be more focused on the jobs they have open, and the kind of people they want to attract.
If Twitter doesn’t do a better job attracting new employees, Hill argues that the company will spend too much valuable time reviewing through candidates, potentially missed great candidates “lost in the noise”, invest too much looking at second tier candidates, and stretch out the hiring process much longer than it needs to be.
While focused on Twitter, Hill’s advice is applicable to any start-up looking to hire employees, particularly at a time when taking on full-time staff is an exercise where making a mistake on the wrong person can be a crucial and expensive problem.
