Topsy Spins Search on its Head

picture-1After three years in development, Topsy has finally launched…and it’s a search engine that actually lives up to the hype.

Topsy generates results based on how many times a search term is mentioned on Twitter. The idea is that if something attracts a lot of Tweets, it must be interesting or relevant.

What makes Topsy so intriguing and, potentially, so exciting is the focus on Twitter rather than indexing the entire Web – a technique used by Google, et al.

Doing what Google does has been the biggest weakness and challenge facing new search engine entrants such as Wolfram because it’s difficult to be that much better than Google. By taking a different approach to search, Topsy could establish itself as a new and different search engine as opposed to a Google wannabe.

Topsy is definitely worth checking out. Do not be surprised if it joins Google as one of the places you go to search.

More: TechCrunch has a glowing review on Topsy – including a sentence that Topsy’s results are “amazing”. Sure, TechCrunch gets excited about a lot of things but Topsy may be more than just a new hyped start-up.
