How Many Users Does Twitter Really Have?

I noticed some chatter about how many people are using Twitter after the Wall St. Journal published a story suggesting Twitter now has 32.1 million, compared with 1.6 million a year ago.

According to Compete.com, Twitter had 19.4 million unique users in the U.S. in April. This means Twitter has 13 million users in other places around the world, which seems reasonable. Heck, there are probably a few million Twitter users in Canada!

Of course, the real question is: Does size matter?

For Twitter, size is important but it could have 100 million users but not be seen as successful unless it can figure out a way to monetize them.

Yeah, I know the Twitter business model story is becoming boring, especially within an industry that has rewarded entrepreneurs for user growth as much, if not more, than revenue/profit growth.

Still, the fact Twitter has unveiled a single source of revenue yet is puzzling. But perhaps patience is a virtue, and having a growing user base while you figure things out is a nice luxury.
