A Focus on Twitter in Iran

Sysomos – a client – has looked at Twitter activity in Iran given Twitter has become an important communications tool amid the political discord following the recent presidential elections.

Among the findings are that nearly 20,000 Iranians are using Twitter compared with about 9,000 in mid-May. Of the people on Twitter, 10% of total users signed up in each of March and June.

Sysomos based the number of Twitter users in Iran on the information people left on their profiles. Keep in mind that a number of people outside of Iran are changing their profile information to indicate they live in Iran as a way to confuse Iranians authorities, who are cracking down on Twitter usage.
