A Fresh Coat of Paint for Twitter.com

Looks like something’s brewing over at Twitter HQ. BoomTown has an “exclusive” that Twitter will launch a new and improved homepage next week that includes “a search box, trends and more information about how they can use Twitter.

It sounds like Twitter is borrowing some UI goodness from Twitter search services such as Twazzup and Scoopler, which provides features such as trends, video, popular links, photos and news.

The overhauled homepage comes on the heels of Twitter publishing “A Special Guide” that provides tip on how to use Twitter, best practices and case studies.

So, what’s the common denominator between the new homepage and the Special Guide (aka Twitter 101)?

It suggests that Twitter is looking to make itself more user-friendly as it attempts to continue attracting more users.

It’s one thing to have 30 million or so users around the world but getting to the size of Facebook (250 million registered users), or one billion users (Twitter’s ultimate goal, according to documents revealed by a hacker recently) is a huge step that requires getting deep into the mainstream.

More: The New York Times’ Bits blog suggests “A Special Guide” is a move by Twitter becoming more commercial by showing businesses how they can use Twitter.
