Twitter doesn’t do deals. The biggest deal was the acquisition of Summize in July 2008 for a reported $15-million cash and stock.
Why Twitter is so deal adverse may have to do with it having other priorities (e.g. fending off hacker attacks). Or it may be that Twitter really wants to stay no-frills, while letting its API do all the heavy lifting when it comes to additional features.
Just for fun, here’s a list of companies that Twitter should purchase:
1. Tweetdeck: With about 20% of the Twitter publishing tool market, Tweetdeck would be a great way for Twitter to make a splash, especially at a time when more people are never visiting Twitter.com. Of course, Tweetdeck would be great way for Google to establish a huge foothold.
2. Topify: Twitter’s new follower notification service is terrible, a mystery given it could be a valuable resource for Twitter users to learn about and manage new followers (follow, block, etc.). In this void, Topify has really stepped up with a user-friendly, effective service.
3. Bit.ly: After making bit.ly its default URL-shortener, Twitter should consummate the relationship by acquiring it.
4. TwitPic: With more than 1.5 million users, TwitPic is the way to share photos on Twitter.
5. Twitterfeed: Lots of people publicize their new blog posts on Twitter using Twitterfeed, although Twitter could probably develop this service fairly easily internally.
6. TweetBeep: Much like Google Alerts, TweetBeep provides e-mail notification about Twitter updates that include keywords that you have pre-determined.
