Twitter Looks to Embrace App Ecosystem

One of the more interesting things about Twitter is its focus on keeping the service no-frills. Sure, there’s search and some information on trending topics but Twitter is fairly unidimensional.

In this void, thousands of third-party applications have been developed that let you pretty much anything you’d like with Twitter.

As well, an ecosystem of Twitter-focused Web such as Twitterratiprovide Twitter users with insight, tips and suggestions on what third-party services to use.

According to ReadWriteWeb, Twitter is “working on an automated method of discovering interesting 3rd party applications and Web sites built on its service to promote to users in the top right corner of its home page.”

While it’s good to see Twitter give third-party developers some much-needed love and attention, you have to wonder why it took so long.

If Twitter is looking for a role model when it comes to promoting third-party applications, I’m sure the fine folks at WordPress can teach them a thing or two about putting together a useful and well-populated directory.
