Twitter Needs Better Advice Than This

As a Canadian, I’m usually unfailingly polite but I have to say that a blog post by econsultancy’s Patricio Robles about five things Twitter must do to survive is a joke. If this is the kind of advice Twitter is getting, then they should just plug their ears. Here’s what Robles suggested as the five things Twitter must do.

1. Can Spam

Comment: Yes, spam is a problem but Twitter has been focused on spam. The other side of the equation is Twitter users need to be more diligently about spam. They need to block new followers who are blatant spammers, and they need to report spammers to Twitter.

2. Secure itself.

Comment: Fair comment given Twitter was hacked because it left a huge whole recently within its security.

3. Launch a business model

Comment: This is such an obvious issue that it should be Twitter’s only must-do item. Then again, it’s been talked about so much that it’s given that really doesn’t need to be mentioned again.

4. Innovate

Comment: It would be good to see Twitter do more than just offer a no-frills service that innovation – at least when it comes enhance services – isn’t Twitter’s thing. Instead, it’s allowed third-party developers to use the API to create thousands of tools, while establishing itself as the platform.

5. Give up on search.

Comment: Dumb idea, dumb idea. At the end of the day, search – more specific, real-time search – could be Twitter’s killer app. The ability index and search all the conversations happening within Twitter could be a valuable asset that can be leveraged in all kinds of different ways, including things such as analytics – a serice that Twitter is going to launch later this year. There are many companies that do a better job of search than Twitter, but Twitter giving up on search would be a bad idea.
