Last week, we talked about how to get unfollowed; today, let’s look at how to get followed. Here are some of the basics:
1. Provide valuable or interesting content, opinion or ideas. Creating a tweet with a link to a good blog post or newspaper/magazine article will score you points from potential followers. The same Twitter karma works by offering insight, answer questions, highlighting a useful online or off-line service/product, or talking about good books, movies and music.
2. Don’t over-tweet. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. A good rule of thumb is about 10 tweets/day: enough to provide a steady presence and a sense of engagement, while not too much to risk being too noisy. If you need to do more than 10 tweets/day, maybe you should be blogging.
3. Make it easy for people to follow you. If you have a blog, use a Twitter widget such as TwitterCounter. If you want more followers, make your Twitter account as obvious as possible in as many places as possible such as Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
4. Complete your bio, including a link to your Web site. It provides people with a better sense of who you are, what you do, and whether there’s a reason to connect.
5. Retweet when it makes sense. By publicizing someone else’s tweet, it shows that your a solid Twitter citizen.
Note: I do not subscribe to the idea that if you want you to add more followers, you should follow a lot of people yourself. Nor do I believe that you should follow everyone who follows you.
