Twitter: Big in Brazil

Social media is being embraced around the world but it’s always interesting to see countries where a particular service is wildly popular. Facebook, for example, has a huge number of users in Canada, while Orkut, Google’s social media service, is popular in India and Brazil.

Not surprisingly, Twitter has been a U.S.-led phenomena since its launch. Last June, for example, Sysomos published a report that 62.1% of Twitter users were from the U.S., while the U.K. and Canada were a distant second and third. Yesterday, Sysomos issued a new report with some surprising developments.

Perhaps the biggest change is that Brazil has emerged as the country with the second-most Twitter users – now accounting for 8.8% of the total population compared with 2% in June. Meanwhile, the percentage of U.S. Twitter users dropped to 50.8% from 62.1%, suggesting that more people around the world are starting to use Twitter.

The big question is why has Twitter become so popular in Brazil. Some theories may be that it has a large and young demographic that use mobile phones. As well, social media is popular as shown by the success of Orkut.
