Smart Move: Twitter Hires Communications Exec

One of the Twitter’s challenges over past year has been the high, if not unrealistic expectations, of where it’s heading strategically and when it might get there. Part of the problem has been the fact that Twitter’s co-founders, Biz Stone, Ev Williams and Jack Dorsey, have been talking a lot publicly, and continually dropping hints about plans for what may be coming over the horizon.

From a communications perspective, all this talking has been fuel for more speculation about what’s ahead. It has put Twitter in an awkward position position because even as the company moves forward strategically, it is difficult for it to avoid disappointing many people who expect more to be happening.

So, it can only be a good thing that Twitter has hired a PR veteran, Sean Garrett, to be its first vice-president of communications. Garrett will hopefully provide Twitter with a public relations and communications plan that will align the company’s messaging to how the business is growing.

One of Garrett’s first moves should probably be harnessing Stone, Williams and Dorsey’s enthusiasm and appetite for publicly speaking. While it’s great the trio is out and about, it’s important for them to have a “script” that reflects how the company is doing and where it’s going. Garrett shouldn’t muzzle them but they need to be reading off the same page.
