Twitter Still a Niche Service

For all the talk about Twitter’s growth, it is interesting to discover that only 8% of U.S. online adults use Twitter. For the first time, Pew focused on Twitter users as opposed to overall online usage. It found that Twitter is particularly popular among young adults, minorities and people who live in cities.

According to Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, 2% of the survey’s respondents said they use Twitter on a typical day. Based on 74% of U.S adults are Internet users, Pew said Twitter accounts for 6% of the entire adult population.

Here’s a table showing the demographic breakdown of Twitter usage. Below this table is an interesting chart from Compete.com that shows how the number of U.S. unique visitors to Twitter.com dropped to 25.6 million from 28.3 million, or about 11%, between Sept. 20 and Oct. 20.
