In social media, size matters…at least when it comes to quantifying the clout and impact of a network. This explains that when it comes to Twitter, 175 million users is frequently thrown around.
But according to a new report by eMarketer, the number of actual Twitter users is far less after taking into account people who have quit the service, have duplicate accounts, or simply visit Twitter.com to read tweets as opposed to tweeting themselves.
eMarketer estimates 20.6 million US adults will access a Twitter account at least monthly this year, up 26.3% from 16.4 million last year. It expects this audience to climb to 28 million adults by 2013.
The focus on actual users vs. total users is important because it provides insight into the real audience – people who are engaged and active. This will have an impact on Twitter’s reach and appeal to advertisers.
